50 days to go!

So I wrote a post when it was 100 days to go, and I figure half way on it is time for another update.

I had a few things to work on:

First up I wanted to run the full 13 mile distance in one go. That was easy enough, at Ming the Merciless I did 14 without any real trouble and then got on the bike.

Then I wanted to do some longer rides. Now been up to 90 miles, and I have done some much faster rides.

Outdoor swimming hadn't started. 50 days on and I added almost a mile a week of outdoor swimming, pretty much all faster than last year's race pace.

This coming weekend I am going to run 15 miles on saturday and then do 56 on my TT bike on Sunday.

So nothing really specific to work on from here. Just keep on ticking over for the next 4 weeks and then a bit of a taper.

Race Report - Forres Triathlon

It was drizzling a bit as I set up for transition. Nothing major but I learned from Turriff and bagged up my shoes to make sure they would be dry when I got to them.

As it is a novice event there were lots of noobs about that I could chat away and give advice to. This was a good distraction and I also caught myself a couple of times giving out advice that I had forgotten myself, and then adapted my plans accordingly.

Thursday had knocked my confidence a bit in the swim. I had declared 6:45 in the hope of going close to 7mins and getting a tow from some fast people to sneak under. But then only doing 7:41 on Thursday night meant I expected all three of the sub-7 swimmers to be climbing over me in the pool. As it was I had to let them all past, but they all bunched up nicely and went past in one go and then they all stayed nicely in line so no faffing about waiting for them to overtake each other at the ends. This meant I got a nice tow for pretty much the whole race and clocked my first sub-7 400m swim, without ever feeling like I was going all that hard.

The drizzle from earlier was gone. To be replaced by a full-on thunderstorm, complete with hailstones. Bagging both my transitions suddenly felt like genius as I slipped on nice dry shoes and socks. They didn't stay dray for long but it did make a huge difference for the first couple of miles and I was carving through places on the bike.

I had screwed up with my bike mechanics though. A few weeks back I took my flashy suspension seat post off to send it back to the manufacturers for a repair and I must have been lazy when I refitted the fixed post as it was about an inch lower than it should have been. Also the smoother tyres I had changed to while it was dry probably weren't the best choice, and the brakes need tightening. I was getting loads of mud sprayed on me (still searching the internet for some photos but no luck yet) and not wearing glasses meant I was getting the occasional bit of grit in my eyes, which I couldn't wipe out because my hands were muddier still. Fortunately, the torrential rain was acting as a good eye wash.

Still despite all that, and the atrocious weather conditions, a quick count through the results looks like I took 11 places on the bike. This is all from the bike miles I have been doing. I was much more able to just keep turning the pedals when it got tougher. On the bike alone I was over 2 minutes quicker than last year.

I came in to transition with one of the Moray Firth guys who had been in my swim lane and who I was chatting to beforehand. Last year he overtook me on the run but coming in to transition I felt much better this time.

I had a really smooth transition, the socks made the change much slicker, even though I could have stopped to wring them out.

Onto the run and I felt a bit stiff to start, but I knew from Thursday night that this was probably just an illusion and I was going much faster than it felt. The course was getting really slidy and I nearly took a header down some steps but managed to catch it. Then onto the path along the river side and it was pretty much 6 inch deep puddles all the way. Every time I turned a corner though there was a smiling marshall cheering me on so I was really enjoying it as I got more and more comfortable.

Looking at the results I was gaining time on the group in front but I never got close enough to see them.

Really pleased with the result. Under an hour and nearly 4 minutes faster than last year. The difference in weather conditions that is probably worth another couple of minutes as well.

Full results here.

Training Review - Week 25 - June 17 to 23

Good to be back from the lurgie. Having a whole week of doing nothing was hard work.

Monday was a nice easy start. Did half the TPT swim session in Lane 2 then started to get messy as I was lapping the traffic so I shifted back up into Lane 3.

Tuesday was a long run. 8 miles, fairly easy. Was probably a bit much after just coming back from the cold I had last week. Was still a bit snotty the whole way. Have put lock laces into the trainers I am planning to race Aberfeldy in. Not sure if I like them or not. I much prefer laced shoes for running in, but a lot of times trying to do laces in transition isn't worth the benefits on the run. Especially on cold or wet days and the shorter the event the less benefit real laces are. Will give them a few weeks trial, but have kept the laces handy in case I decide to switch back.

Wednesday I went out to Knockburn. Tied my session in with some friends so did a bit of everything. Started with an easy 4 mile run on my own, bit slow as I was stiff from 8-miles the night before. Then 2 lap swim in the loch. Planned 3 but she kept stopping to chat to people and we still had a bike to do. Then a quick trip round a loop of the Sprint bike course again.

Thursday I did Stonehaven Aquathon. (There is no L in Aquathon!). Race report separately.

Friday I had planned to test my road bike on a the hard and dry Forres triathlon bike route, but the heavens opened as I was driving through. This meant the course would almost certainly be too soft for my road bike so there was nothing to learn and I decided to take the rest day instead. I had packed my mountain bike just in case the road bike couldn't handle the course anyway.

Saturday was Forres Triathlon. This is getting a race report to itself as well. Main thing for here is that taking the mtb was definitely necessary.

Sunday I got dragged to Knockburn to act as morale support for my Iron friend's last open water swim before Austria. Did a couple of easy laps.

Good week for swimming distance. Really good week for speed, swimming and running both went much faster than I expected. Missed out on bike miles but

So targets for last week (Week 25) were:

Swim Swim >2.5 miles. Bike >60 miles. Run >18 miles. One run over 8 miles. 2 short core and 2 short stretching sessions.

Actuals were:

Monday - Swim with TPT 2,150m.

Tuesday - Run 8 miles, 67 mins.

Wednesday - Run 4 miles in 34 mins. Swim 1,200m in 36 mins. Bike 11.5 miles in 43mins.

Thursday - Stonehaven Aquathon. 400m swim in 7 mins 41. 2.8 mile run in 18min 27.

Friday - Rest day. Some stretching but not enough to count as a whole session.

Saturday - Forres Triathlon. 400m swim in 6 mins 56! MTB 9.1 miles in 36mins. Run 2.1 miles in 15mins 11.

Sunday - Swim 1,200m in 30 mins.

Result -
Swim 3.3 miles (5,350 m). Bike 20.6 miles. Run 17 miles. 1 run over 8 miles. 0 core and 0.5 stretching sessions.

Race Report - Stonehaven Aquathon

Chicked again! By a 5 measly seconds this time. Thought after beating all the women at Knockburn Sprint that I might get a few races without losing to ladies, but no such luck.

Had some problems before the race. They had a massive amount of people turn up without pre-registering so there was a long queue that was moving really slowly. Wasn't dealing well with the crowd and was getting pretty stressed. Couldn't focus enough to do the breathing exercises so the twitches were going crazy and I was burning a lot of adrenaline and my heart rate was off the scale. Not ideal an hour before race time. Once I finally got signed up I managed to go and sit in a quiet corner for 10 minutes to calm myself down a bit, but I was still carrying a lot of tension in my shoulders and back as I went outside to set up my transition and my heart rate was still the wrong side of 100. Managed to find some friends to hide amongst and continued to relax a bit but was definitely far from my best preparation.

To the race itself:

Swim was pretty terrible. I expected to go about 7 mins. On Monday night during training I did 7:34 in the middle of a training set, going slow-fast-slow-fast lengths, completely by accident. I hate the salt water but that wasn't the main problem, I was just too tired. Having the cold last week and then going into a fairly heavy week while I am still coughing was always a bit ambitious. In the end I was 7:41 for the swim (8:07 including hauling myself out of the water and shuffling to the timing mats). The lanes at Stonehaven are quite wide and the other 6 people in my lane all got away quite quickly so it felt pretty lonely. Despite the huge lanes they made it a no-overtaking swim, and at the end of the second length I had to move over to let two people past. That probably cost me a few seconds, but more importantly it got me out of my rhythm and gave me a chance to taste the water and that made me feel a bit queasy. the real killer was doing too much. My arms were really tiring by the half way point. This is clear on my Garmin swim tracker, the lap splits gradually drop off from 56, 55, 57 (includes being overtaken), 55, 60, 57, 58, 63.

Transition was better than it has been lately. Only had to put on my running shoes, but also took a mouthful of water to rinse out the salt taste.

Felt like it took a while to get into my running. Looking at Garmin track after the race I was going faster than I have done for a few years, with the pace well inside 7 min/mile. Was losing ground to the leading lady for all of the first lap, but was picking off plenty of other places so was happy enough. Onto the second lap I finally started to relax a bit and made back a lot of the ground I had lost to the leading lady. Because of the 5 second start intervals and knowing I started 30 seconds after the first people there was a chance that even if I could close the gap a little I might beat her on time if she had started with the first swim wave. I got the gap back to 25 seconds, but she had started in wave 3 so was still 5 seconds faster overall.

After I finished and got my shoes off I found that the shoes have rubbed through a patch off skin about the size of my thumb. Stings a lot despite the thick coating of Sudocrem I have layered on it. This will mean an enforced sock day for Forres on Saturday as I wont be able to run on it in this condition without them.

The official results have me as 3rd in category (M18+) and fourth overall, but there is at least one name missing off that list so I think I was actually 4th and 5th. If they had cut out Vets into over-40 category as they normally do then I would have been second Senior.

In hindsight I am actually really happy. I can't have any serious complaint about the swim given that it was my third swim of the week, and I hate the salt water. And the run, as much as I was stiff and uncomfortable and it has done a lot of damage to my left foot, it was still the fastest I have gone for years, and didn't feel any tougher than other runs I have done, despite running fairly hard both the previous nights.

Race Report - Knockburn Sprint Triathlon

First time I have done the Sprint race at Knockburn. In previous year's it has been held on the same day as the Standard race that I normally do. This year they have been split to different dates to simplify the Scottish Championship Standard race in August. That will be my last race before Aberfeldy.

I purposefully set up to treat this as a practice run for the Standard race, which in turn I will be using as a practice run for Aberfeldy. This meant setting up my transitions for a Half Ironman rather than a sprint.

The water was ridiculously warm. 17 degrees according to the chart on the wall. We were all in the water about 5 minutes before the start. I took a spot way out to the left but near to the front. I was hoping to get a clean line by staying out wide, but instead I got squeezed right up against the bank. I got caught up in the washing machine of arms and legs down to and round the first two turns. Despite swimming almost a water-polo stroke to see where the melee was and trying to avoid the punching I still got a lot more than I wanted. Along with a couple of mouthfuls of water that I could have done without.

Once we got out onto the back straight I decided that the drafting effect I was getting from being in the pack wasn't worth all the fighting so I took a really wide line and went maybe 4 or 5 meters out to the left of the pack. Having the clean water to play in made a huge difference and I was overtaking whole groups from there.

Managed to get back onto the feet of the group I should have been with all along. Within 20-30 seconds of the guys that I really want to be racing with. In a longer or cleaner race I fancy my chances at being out of the water at the front of that group rather than the back. Out of the water and in transition in 13:57.

I had a total faff in transition. Decided to skip the socks from my Half Ironman kit (wrong choice, see later) but went for everything else including the cycling jacket. Could have done without the sunglasses as they fogged up straight away and I had to take them off again before I was out of the gates.

Decent mount onto the bike on the move. I really can't understand why so few people practice that bit. Always pass someone standing still trying to get onto their bike.

The new bike is definitely quicker. Not as massively as I had hoped but on the flat and the downhill I was making places. On the uphill sections I was dropping odd places but only to nice bikes. Everyone that passed me was riding carbon, most of them with carbon aero wheels. This is a definite step change from riding my alloy bike where I have been known to lose places even to alloy touring bikes.

Few minor issues on the bike that still need work. Shoulders struggle after more than a few minutes on the tri-bars, so position probably still needs a bit more work. Aero helmet needs to be fitted better. It wants to be slightly too far forward so it is cutting a slice out of my forwards vision. And finally I hit a pothole or a rock at about the 9 mile mark and there was a huge bang from the front wheel. Thought I had popped the tyre or maybe even cracked the carbon. Looks ok afterwards but sounded expensive at the time.

Not having the socks on for the bike was the wrong decision. It didn't affect the bike but when I got to transition I had frozen toes and couldn't feel the front half of my feet. This made getting into my running shoes a lot harder than it needed to be. Then the whole of the first lap of he run I was struggling to feel my feet so was doing a bit of a shuffle. Second lap was better

I was having problems with heartburn and a sore throat on the ride. I thought at the time that it was just from trying to breathe a few mouthfuls of the loch water. With a couple of days hindsight it was probably early stages of the manflu I have had the rest of the week. Can't tell if it was affecting my performance though.

Overall, I beat all the female racers, which I think is a first for me in a triathlon, and I was first ThreePeak-er, that is not technically a first but it might be a first in a race where there were more than 2 of us.  In the bigger picture, I am still about 2-3 minutes total down on the people that I really feel I should be racing with. I am down to just losing that time in dribs and drabs against the generalists or single chunks against specialists. The swim specialist I want to be racing was out of the water with a 3:30 lead on me, but then there were seconds between us on the bike and swim. The generalists were sneaking 30 seconds each leg on me, (including transitions gave them 5 shots of 30 secs each). this is definitely an improvement on previous years where I would lose ground to the specialists in their non-specialist events as well.

Once upon a time I would have listed myself as a specialist runner, but at the minute my running form simply isn't good enough. If I can sort that out it will make me a minute over 5k easily, maybe even two on a course that suits my style. I also know I can transition much better than the untidy ones I did this time round. Then I will be down to looking for small handfuls of seconds each on the swim and bike to put me right into the group I want to be beating.

Training Review - Week 23 - June 3 to June 9

Monday, swimming was mobbed so I had to drop down a lane. Managed to do over a mile for the session, better than the last few weeks. Also had a chanceto looks at some of the photos from Saturday's race. Not sure how I even managed to ride the bike in such a bad position.

Hips too far forward.

Back much too curved.
Shoulder angles, not terrible, but not great.
Head tilted too far.

And so on.

At least I look happier and more comfortable running.

Tuesday was nearly a nightmare. I went out for my run, got 50 yards and Garmin died. Was going a route I haven't done for years and needed to do the distance so went home and plugged it in. Spent nearly an hour getting increasingly frustrated with it but did finally get it fixed. So I was late going out but I did still go for a run out the old railway line. Did 8.2 miles in 67 mins. then came home and put the TT bike on the turbo trainer and set up the camera. Made a few small changes to my position again.

Wednesday I took the TT bike out to Knockburn and took a roll around the sprint triathlon course for this sunday's race. Still a few niggles with the bike. It is making a noise when I pedal, and the headset is still squeaking as if it is loose whenever I have to get out of the saddle. Anyway, a group of us coasted round the 11 mile course in just over 41 minutes. Should go much quicker on Sunday, but good to remind myself of the few small climbs.

Then went in the loch for 3 laps. Any one of my three laps  from today was faster than my fastest single lap from last year, and I wasn't particularly pushing on any of them. 37 minutes total, fastest lap was 11:39. That's my swim miles for this week ticked off with the race still to come.

Thursday was a cinema day so just a quick 5k on the treadmill in 24 mins. Then Byzantium. What a strange and pointless film.

Friday I had planned another easy roll on the the TT bike but decided instead to have a rest day. Legs are still not recovered from racing last Saturday.

Saturday was hard work. I didn't sleep well again, and when I got up in the morning I really just wanted a proper rest day before racing. Too much to do though and had to cram it all in before lunchtime so I could go to the cinema in the afternoon. Eventually dragged myself out on the TT bike but sacked that after less than a mile and just rolled round the block and home.

Garmin was being shit again. After another hour of trying to fix it I have finally given up and sent it back to Garmin with a complaint letter. This will make at least the next couple of weeks of training more difficult to track. I am tempted to send just go out and buy another and send them the bill. Also something on the TT bike is still really noisy and I can't find the source. It is rubbing loud enough that other riders were complaining on Wednesday. I have checked everything I can and still can't find the problem.

Sunday I did Knockburn Sprint Triathlon. Separate Race report to come on Tuesday.

So targets for last week (Week 23) were:

Race Report - Ming the Merciless Duathlon

Friday night:
The weather this evening couldn't make up it's mind so I have packed both my road bike and my TT bike.

This is the second year in a row I have done the Ming the Merciless race. I did the short run - short bike  race in 2012 and accidentally won it, but never tried the long race which all of the "real" racers take part in. Also never done a multi-sport race of anywhere near this distance before. And haven't run this far on a single run since Edinburgh Marathon in May 2011. A quick check in the training diary suggests I have only ever run more than 13 miles 10 times in my entire life, and have never even considered getting on the bike afterwards.

On the smaller side of the other issues that might come up. I haven't really gotten used to the TT bike yet, and never really ridden it hard, or with the TT hat, or over a real hill.

Saturday morning:
I got up in plenty of time to get to the race. I didn't have anyone to go with me so I aimed to cut it fairly close for arriving, aiming to be there about half an hour before the race. Unfortunately I got re-routed by some roadworks before I was even out of Dyce, and after that got stuck in a huge traffic jam at Thainstone. When I actually arrived it was 8 minutes till start time and the race-briefing was well underway. I had to sneak in at the back to register, then sneak back out to try and set up for transition in a rush.

Run:
I was quite lucky to find a couple of friends at the start. One of whom runs pretty much at my pace. So we set of for the first couple of miles together and pretty much stayed within 10 yards of each other all the way to about 9 miles.

Garmin decided to play games so I don't have measures of distance or time, or a proper track of how I ran. The route is basically a nasty 7 mile uphill, then a 7 mile downhill. At the top I was sitting in tenth place overall. Going much better than I expected. My friend started getting away from me on the steeper descents though. Once upon a time that would have annoyed me, as descending used to be my speciality and even serious hill runners wouldn't make distance on me during downhill sections. For today I was happy enough to still be running comfortably so just tried to settle in and keep ticking along. I started to struggle when the route turned back uphill at mile 11 and was pretty much shuffling from there to the end of the run with empty legs. It is a nasty hilly course, worth more in real terms than the pure distance. Was finished in about 2 hours. Will see what the results say if/when they come out. Glad to get such a long run in though. Need to start getting regular runs this length in.

Transition:

Transition was a complete mess. Partly because I hadn't had time to set up properly, but mostly because the last few miles of the run had drained me completely and my brain was completely switched off and couldn't actively make any useful decisions. I just put biking clothes on as I reached them rather than deciding if I actually needed them or not. Fortunately, I was awake enough to reset Garmin so I would get a proper bike track. And I did have a flapjack and a decent drink of water.

I also had a thought about throwing in the towel. I could have gone home happy enough having completed the long run. I decided to carry on in the hope that I would ease off once I got on the bike.

Bike:
I decided to stick with the TT bike as it looked like the sun was going to stay out. This was the right decision in terms of weather. There was a little spit of rain the last couple of miles but nothing serious. However, it was the wrong choice of bike overall. The fiddling I did on Thursday means my position is now comfortable on the turbo, but apparently nowhere else. Even on the flat it wasn't really comfortable to be down on the tribars. The descents were a bit better but then they were so twisty I had to keep getting up to cover the brakes. The climbs were horrible, and there were a lot of them.

The bad bike position was hurting my back so I had a few stops to try and stretch it out. I also don't like the combination of carbon bike and the aero helmet. Bike makes a lot of air noise and helmet blocks traffic noise. Sounds like there is always a car behind me, which then makes it hard to tell when there really is a car behind me. Tempted to modify the helmet (i.e. drill ear holes in it). As it is only in the cosmetic fairing and not in the helmet itself I think this would be legal but need to get a check on the rules.

Didn't refuel enough for such a long event. only the flapjack at the end of the run and a couple of gels on the bike. Barely drank enough either, had a couple of water stops at fuel stations, should have made sure my bike bottle was full instead of 60-70%, and with more than just water. The aero bottle is going to be too small for Aberfeldy, will have to figure that out. Don't think a standard bottle cage will fit and even then there is only space for a single bottle.

Sunday morning:
Not loving the stairs today. And looks like I did a pretty poor job with the suntan cream again. Going to take the TT bike out again this morning just for an easy roll to finish out my miles for the week, and try and ease off my legs. Have put the settings back to where it was on Wednesday night.

Lots of good lessons learned for Aberfeldy.
